In this procedure, the radiologist places a tiny wire into the breast with the tip of the wire touching an abnormal area. The patient then undergoes a surgical biopsy in a hospital or surgical center where the wire and the abnormal breast tissue are removed by a surgeon. This procedure helps the surgeon find a small abnormal area within the breast.
