In addition to our state-of-the-art digital mammography,
we also offer high resolution breast sonography. This is performed on
a GE Logiq 7 sonography unit, one of the most technologically advanced
sonography units on the market today.
When should I obtain a breast sonogram?
Sonography is usually performed on any mass or lump that can
be felt by you or your physician. Your physician will usually order this
test if it is necessary. This study is also often performed to evaluate
an abnormal finding on a mammogram. By performing sonography, the breast
imaging physician can evaluate the lump. The information obtained may
help him to determine whether the lump is benign or malignant. This information
is then used along with information from the mammogram to help your physician
decide whether you need a biopsy. A biopsy is where a small piece of breast
tissue is removed and examined under a microscope to see whether or not
it is malignant.
How is a sonogram performed?
You will lie on a comfortable table, and a breast imaging specialist
will place a small amount of gel on your breast. A sonogram probe will
then be placed in contact with your breast, and it will produce a picture
of the inside of your breast on a computer screen. There is absolutely
no pain involved in this process. The probe will be moved slowly across
your breast, and pictures will be obtained. These pictures will be evaluated
by the radiologist. In most cases, the radiologist will discuss these
findings with you during or immediately after you have this procedure.
He will then send a report to your physician telling him of the results
of the test. The entire test usually takes about 15 minutes to perform.
